Prior to the changes, B-1A to B-1B

Ship 2 underwent the most structural modification for the flight test progam. During 1981-1982 much of the skin was peeled off, and major changes were made to the flight control and other systems to make it handle and perform like we thought a B model would perform.

Here's a shot of Ship 2 in the hangar (Bld 1623) getting prepped for overhaul. By the way, this is a staged shot, not a "real" action shot. I can identiy two of the people in the picture, me and Denny Haun, we're standing at the control panel of the ground hydraulic unit near the left wing (right middle of the photo).
